In some aspects, The Santa Clauses is surprisingly frank that life as St. Scott’s decision to retire is also partly influenced by his and his family's longing for a life outside the North Pole. As Scott observes after surviving his own fall off the roof, the last Santa's apparent demise seemingly had little effect on his elves when Scott and Charlie first arrived. The Santa Clause franchise clearly presents itself with the whimsical flair of the holiday season, but The Santa Clauses itself begins to call some aspects of the franchise’s fairy tale-like story into question. That is dark material indeed for a Disney Christmas movie, and raises the implication of Santa's not only being pulled into the role against their will, but also being essentially expendable whenever a new candidate comes along. More to the point, the past Santa effectively dies (or is at least involuntarily-retired) with Scott Calvin being no more in assuming his mantle. Meanwhile, Scott’s Santa predecessor himself also suffers an ambiguous fate that could imply his death. RELATED: Is The Santa Clauses’ Befana A Real Legend? The Christmas Witch Explainedīefore long, he is taking note of which kids are naughty or nice as he accepts that he is indeed Santa before returning to the North Pole with Bernard the Elf (David Krumholtz). This is plainly visible in Scott taking issue with elves being depicted as too old in a Christmas toy commercial plan, something he would never have done before. Scott's initial efforts to convince Charlie, and even himself, that he is not Santa gradually recede as the Santa persona takes over. Scott, in a very literal way, loses his very identity by having the bad luck to accidentally startle the previous Santa into falling off his roof. There is also the aspect of Scott becoming Santa on a more internal level, with Scott’s mind essentially being overwritten and replaced by Santa. ![]()
